Books I Recommend
*in no order.
Rise to Rebellion, by Jeff Shaara
A fictionalized historical novel about the early days of the American Revolution. Learned more about that time than in all history classes in 19 years of school.
The Glorious Cause, by Jeff Shaara
Follows Rise to Rebellion by detailing the rest of the Revolutionary War.
Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy
I just started reading Tom Clancy novels in 2003. I've read three of his early books, and others have told me that the newer novels aren't as good. Still, Red Storm Rising was a fantastic read; I wish I had read it during the Cold War.
The Monkey Wrench Gang, by Edward Abbey
Only book by Abbey I have read. This is a very good novel about the modern America West. Hopefully it is fiction, and not based on a true story. Read it and you'll know what I mean.
Sleepers, by Lorenzo Carcaterra
I think I read this book in a couple of days. Great read (although the movie wasn't as good.)
'Salems Lot, by Stephen King
My favorite King book. The Stand is a close, close second. A lot of people who don't read King think it is all horror and guts. Well, some of it is, but Eye of the Dragon isn't. It is set in the Middle Ages. Like Clancy, King's early stuff is gold.
The Alienist, by Caleb Carr
I found Carr to be a little difficult to read. I found myself rereading sections to understand what was going on. But, a great book.
From Beirut to Jerusalem, by Thomas Friedman
This book will educate you about the conflict in the Middle East. It gives historical background on the conflict that is applied to today's violence.
The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
Absolutely fantastic. All I can say. It is being made into a movie. I can only hope they make it as good.
The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair
I've also read Fast Food Nation, but this book about the meat industry in late 1800s Chicago is a good read.
